Questions and Answers

Q. What if I'm currently not in shape?

A. We will get you in shape! We have excellent strength and conditioning coaches that know how to increase your strength, speed, flexibility, and improve your endurance. Nutritional advice and meal planning are also covered.

Q. I have never been in a fight, how do I know if this is for me?

A. We have had many fighters step into a cage who have never been in a "streetfight" previously and have done very well. That being said, each person should visualize what it will feel like to fight in a cage against another fighter. We will train you on what to do physically, but you should think ahead and make sure this is something you ultimately want to do. We only want trainees that will dedicate enough time and energy to actually go into a fight. the desire must be there to compete and fight, if not, stop reading and find another hobby! (or contact us about learning basic self defense without the expectations involved with our fighter program)

Q. If I don't already know martial arts, what skills should i expect to acquire in 6 months?

A. Within 6 months to 1 year you will be able to punch and kick with proper form, speed and power, You should also be able to kick head height with speed and power. You will have sparred many rounds and know what it feels like to get hit and not quit. You will have learned various ways to take an opponent down, hold them down, and apply submissions - chokes, armlocks and leglocks. You will have an understanding on how to defend against the same moves as well.

Q. How does the training progress?

A. The first 3 goals are to train the following areas - Standup (kickboxing for MMA), Grappling, and Strength and Conditioning. At approximately 3 months of training, trainees will enter a grappling tournament to gain competition experience. With another 3-6 months trainees will enter another grappling competition or a kickboxing match. Within 12 to 24 months from start of the program, the most dedicated trainees will represent our team in an amateur MMA fight. Graduates of the 2 year program will be able to pursue Professional MMA.

Q- What is the facility like? What kind of equipment?

A- We are located at Tiger Martial Arts, 170 Center Lane, Levittown, NY. We have a great training facility, with plenty of mat space, heavy bags, all kinds of kicking shields and punching mitts, some light weights, medicine balls, sand bells, we have everything you need to get in shape and train to fight.

Q. What does it cost?

A. The cost of the program is  for the entire 2 year training program. The   includes gloves, hand wraps, mouthpiece, and shin pads. It also represents a commitment of behalf of the trainees and provides the minimum liability insurance to the gym. All other equipment will be provided by the gym and through sponsorship. The cost comes out to around $10/month, which includes approximately 40 hours of training each month. This program is financed primarily through sponsorship, that is why we can offer the program for such a low fee. The program is focused on developing athletes for MMA competition.

Q. What does the tryout consist of?

A. The tryout consists of a warm up, striking basics, a few take downs, and some grappling techniques. We don't expect you to know all the moves we will show you, but you will be evaluated on how quickly you can pick things up, your athleticism, and your physical attributes (strength, speed, power, agility, flexibility, endurance). That being said, the most important thing is a good attitude and a willingness to learn.

Q. What do I bring to the tryout? What is the attire?

A. You do not need anything, but if you have kickboxing gloves bring them. You should tryout with a T-shirt or rashguard. Shorts are preferred and should have no zippers or metal. Shorts should not fit too loose, as you will be grappling in them.
